1.) to separate different ideas or pieces of information that have become confused together

2.) disentangle yourself (from sb/sth)
to escape from a difficult situation that you are involved in

3.) to remove knots from ropes, strings etc that have become twisted or tied together
4.) to separate something from the things that are twisted around it
